Almost any job in the world requires experience. For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, it can be particularly difficult to acquire that experience and get hired.
Dot’s Thrift & Gift Store fills this gap. It’s a fully functioning 3500 square foot second-hand store that is open to the public and sells furniture, clothing, decorations, books, and all sorts of treasures. Individuals supported by MidState Arc perform every task related to the business such as operating the cash register, intake and sorting of donations, arranging items for sale, and maintaining the goods in the store.
Through this real-world job experience these individuals gain skills and confidence and move on to employment in the community. Individuals who have trained at Dot’s have gone on to work in a wide variety of positions including restaurants, offices, and other retail businesses.
Every item for sale in the store was donated, and we gladly accept donations from the public during business hours. Items that are not sold are either recycled or donated to other organizations that can utilize them better. Every dollar taken in by the store goes directly to supporting the employment program.
The thrift store was inspired by Dot Patterson, one of our individuals who expressed a strong desire to work in retail. The shop opened in 2002 and was renamed after Dot in 2006.
